Cyclones is the kids part of Kettering Cycling Club (KCC). It is a Go-ride and British Cycling Clubmark club which means it passes rigorous quality standards and provides a safe place children to have fun and develop their cycling interest.
We have 6 British Cycling trained and registered coaches. All coaches are first aid and safeguarding trained and DBS checked.
We run Cyclones sessions all year round in safe off road environments on Monday nights 7-8pm and do this under floodlights in winter. We are totally free and usually run four Mondays per month (all details on the website calendar). We split the kids into age or ability groups to make sure kids aren't out of their depth.
The sessions are all about fun and getting kids to enjoy their bikes with a focus on fitness and skills. Some kids just want to race too but If they don't that's just fine. They just need a mountain or cyclocross bike that fits them, a helmet, suitable clothing for the conditions and a drink.
We rarely call off due to weather. Once the kids are warmed up any inclement conditions are soon forgotten and they usually add to the training opportunity in terms of skills and handling. If we do call things off this will be by email and on Facebook.
Adults are encouraged to stay, watch and support and the parents are a friendly and welcoming bunch who often help in some way. Volunteers always welcome!
Current venues used are Rothwell Recreation Ground (meet at Community Centre Ponder Road) and Kettering Buccleuch Academy (sports centre pavilion), Weekley Glebe Road, Kettering. These are grass venues with some woodland. More venues are being scoped for this year.
We incorporate Go-ride racing on some evenings in summer which is fun, safe and in age groups. This operates off road or on closed tarmac circuits like Rockingham Speedway. We also organise special family days out in the summer months, like our Fineshade woods trip.
We host Central League Cyclocross races in winter to give the kids something local to aim at in their training. These are fun and safe off road races and they love it. If you want to do Cyclocross League events which is great entry level racing, you will only need a British Cycling (BC) race license if kids are 12 or over but your child will need to be a BC member to take the cheaper on line entry option. You can always enter on the day.
BC membership is free for the first year if you are a KCC club member. See this link for instructions.
We have a Kettering Cyclones separate Facebook site which has lots of pics and updates. Simply apply to be added and I will confirm you if your child comes to sessions.
If you are interested in a Cyclones jersey (see pic attached) they are subsidised to £17. Order through Marcus Buksh on the tab above or Facebook message him (either Kettering CC or Kettering Cyclones). Because these jerseys and the Cyclones unashamedly link us to the Kettering Cycling Club mother ship, You need to have KCC family youth or family membership to purchase one.
We look forward to welcoming you. Just turn up to any advertised session or email me to tell us you're coming first.
